Food Forward

Food Forward fights hunger and prevents food waste by rescuing fresh surplus produce, connecting this abundance with people in need and inspiring others to do the same.

We collect fresh fruits and vegetables that would normally go to waste from backyard fruit trees, public orchards, farmers markets and the downtown Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market. 100% of the produce we recover is donated to hunger relief agencies across eight counties in Southern California.

According to the NRDC, up to 40% of food in the United States is wasted. At the same time, one in nine Californians lacks adequate access to food. Food Forward presents a simple solution to this disparity by connecting surplus fresh fruits and vegetables with people experiencing food insecurity in our communities.

Food Share

Since 1978, Food Share has been feeding the hungry in Ventura County. It all began when eight friends banded together to provide food to those in need under a bridge in Ventura, CA. The early philanthropic movement that started in a family garage, quickly outgrew a donated fire station in Saticoy and now operates in Oxnard, CA with two warehouses with a combined 36,000 square feet.

Today, staff and volunteers distribute more than 13 million pounds of food, or nearly 12 million meals annually through its 190 pantry and program partners. As Ventura County’s regional food bank, Food Share provides food for over 75,000 hungry friends and neighbors monthly. Food Share is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief network of food banks, as well as the California Association of Food Banks.  Food Share is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Downtown Los Angeles was a much smaller town when Charles Von der Ahe opened his 20-foot wide Groceteria on 7th and Figueroa in 1906 with $1,200 in savings. It was a neighborhood store that catered to the needs of local families. Von der Ahe pioneered “cash and carry” as an alternative to “charge and delivery.” His formula proved so successful that by 1928, Vons had expanded to 87 stores.

Charles Von der Ahe sold his chain the following year. Four years later, despite the Depression, his sons Ted and Will re-started Vons. Its growth and innovation over the next 70 years was non-stop. In 1948, the brothers opened their most ambitious store at the corner of Santa Barbara and Crenshaw. Thanks to the introduction of pre-packaged perishables, they were able to offer some of the first self-service produce, meat and deli departments. This milestone marked the advent of the first true supermarkets as we know them today. The most explosive growth occurred during the 1970’s when Vons branched out to 159 stores with 16,000 employees, making it firmly the #1 grocery retailer in Southern California.

Today, Vons operates as a banner of Albertsons Companies, one of the largest food and drug retailers in the United States. With both a strong local presence and national scale, the company operates stores across 35 states and the District of Columbia under 20 well-known banners. Albertsons Companies is committed to helping people across the country live better lives by making a meaningful difference, neighborhood by neighborhood. In 2017 alone, along with the Albertsons Companies Foundation, the company gave nearly $300 million in food and financial support. These efforts helped millions of people in the areas of hunger relief, education, cancer research and treatment, programs for people with disabilities and veterans outreach.

Nights of Worship

Nights of Worship is a group of worshipers and musicians from different churches seeking His presence for the glory of God in Ventura County. Through a few chance meetings and God connections, we began to see that this was something He was doing corporately across Ventura County. God has beautifully crafted a team of leaders that carry a heart to see the kingdom come in Ventura County as it is in heaven, and  we couldn’t be more excited to come together for these nights (NOW). It’s a special thing God’s doing here in Ventura County, and we’re honored to be a part of it.
